今回は、ハワイ生まれでハワイが大好きなインストラクターLeighna（レイナ）が、彼女が思うハワイの魅力を語ってくれました。
Why I love Hawai’i 私がハワイを大好きなのはなぜ？
I was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawai’i and it’s my favorite place in the world. Although living in paradise is not without many struggles (such as homelessness, food insecurity, Native Hawaiian rights, high cost of living, etc.), what keeps me grateful is the following list:
1. Nature– Growing up in Hawai’i has instilled within me the importance of protecting the land. To Native Hawaiians, the land or ʻāina is the most precious resource because it not only provides food, shelter, water—the Hawaiians feel a deep connection to the land. The land represents life and power. Just like one would love family, Hawaiians love the land in the same way. These values were instilled in me, and I love and cherish the land and ocean. My favorite nature activity is surfing!
2. Aloha Spirit– There is a pleasant and kind way the people act towards others in Hawai’i, which is called the aloha spirit. This quality includes kindness/tenderness, humility, unity/harmony, patience, and perseverance. I
believe Japanese culture is slightly similar, from what I have seen. For example,
if someone had a flat tire on the side of the road, it will be easy to find someone
who would be happy to help. Neighbors will share mango with others from their trees, or even leave a box of fruit out in front of their house for anyone to take!
People love to help others in Hawai’i, that is why there are so many nonprofits
here. (Nonprofits are organizations or groups that come together to help the
community. For example, there are nonprofits who feed the homeless or try to
solve pollution and save the ocean.) Even though the Native Hawaiians have had
to suffer (if you would like to find out more, Google “Overthrow of Hawai’i”), they still have so much love to share.
3. Mix of Cultures– They call Hawai’i the “Melting Pot” because there are so many cultures that live in harmony here. Back in the 1800s, sugar plantations attracted immigrants from China, Japan, Philippines, Korean, Portuguese. Even after,many more immigrants from all over came to live in Hawai’i. Because there areso many cultures, people are very accepting of differences.
4. Food– Because there are so many cultures, there is a lot of different food here! My favorites are Japanese food (like agedashi tofu) and Hawaiian food (like chicken long rice).
Fun facts about Hawai’i:
- Everyone takes off their shoes/slippers before entering a house. We do not like to bring in the dirt from outside. It is bad manners if you do! (Just like in Japan!)
- Hawaiian/Asian culture is the most prevalent on the islands. We eat with chopsticks and never stick it upright in a bowl of rice. There are many Japanese restaurants. My favorite izakaya is Izakaya Torae Torae in Honolulu.
- Music is big here! At parties, there is always singing, instruments playing, and dancing. We love karaoke.
- It is common to live in multi-generational homes so families can take care of
elders.
私は、ハワイのホノルルで生まれ育ちました。ハワイは、世界中で私のお気に入りの場所です。楽園に住んでいるということは、（ホームレス、食料不安、ハワイ原住民の権利、高い物価などのように）何も問題がないってことではないけれど、私が感謝していることは以下の通りです。
１． 自然―ハワイで育つことで、土地を守ることの重要さを私の中に植え付けられた。ハワイ原住民にとって、土地（アイナ）は、最も大切な資源なのです。それは、食べ物、家、水
を提供するだけでなく、ハワイの人たちは、土地と強いつながりを感じています。土地は、命やパワーを表します。人が家族を愛するのと同じように、ハワイの人は土地を愛します。これらの価値観が私に植え込まれました。だから、私は、土地や海を愛しているし、大事に思っています。私の好きな自然での活動はサーフィンです。
２． アロハスピリット―ハワイで人々が他の人に接するときの心地よく優しい対応をアロハの精神と呼びます。特徴として、親切/優しさ、謙虚、団結/調和、忍耐と根気が含まれます。私の経験から、日本の文化も少し似ていると思います。例えば、誰かが道路脇でパンクしていたら、喜んで手伝う人を見かけるでしょう。ご近所さんが、木になったマンゴを他の人に分け与えるでしょう。また、誰でも取れるように、家の前に果物の箱を置いておきます。ハワイの人は、他の人を喜んで助けます。それは、ハワイには非営利団体がたくさんある理由でもあります。（非営利団体とは、コミュニティーを支援するために協力する組織やグループです。例えば、ホームレスに食事を与えたり、汚染を解決して海を救う非営利団体があります。）ハワイの原住民は、自分が苦しくても、喜んで人に分け与えるという愛を今も持っているのです。（もっと知りたい人は、「Overthrow of Hawai’i”」を検索して下さい。）
３． 文化の混合―ハワイは「人種のるつぼ」と言われます。ハワイでは、たくさんの文化が調和して存在しているからです。1800 年代にさかのぼると、中国、日本、フィリピン、韓国やポルトガルから大勢の移民が砂糖農園にやってきました。それ以後も世界からさらに多
くの移民がハワイに住むためにやってきました。多くの文化が存在するため、人々は異質
なものを容易に受け入れます。
４． 食べ物―たくさんの文化が存在するため、ハワイにはいろいろな食べ物があります。私の好きな食べ物は、（揚げ出し豆腐のような）日本食と（チキンロングライスのような）ハ
ワイ食です。
ハワイについての面白い事実：
- 家の中に入る前に、みんな靴やスリッパを脱ぎます。外から汚いものを家の中に持ち込むのを嫌がります。
- ハワイのアジア文化は、島々に広く行き渡っています。箸を使って食べるし、ご飯茶碗に箸を縦に刺したり絶対にしません。日本食レストランがたくさんあります。私の好きな居酒屋は、ホノルルにある居酒屋トラエトラエです。
- ここでは音楽が凄いです。パーティーでは、いつも歌ったり、楽器を演奏したり、ダンスをします。私は、カラオケが大好きです。
- 複数世代で同居しているのが普通です。だから、家族でお年寄りのお世話ができます。
