Hello from the Tomodachi-USA Management Team!

Tomodachi-USA is an online English learning community where Japanese learners connect with instructors living in the U.S. and Hawaii. Through Zoom or Google Meet, our members not only practice English but also enjoy cultural exchange in a fun and friendly atmosphere.

Our service is operated by BLOOMINGFIELD, LTD in Tokyo, in collaboration with our Hawaii partner, R&NOCKEY, LTD.

A Message from Our Founder

Hi, I’m Renko Kuroda, the founder of Tomodachi-USA.

After graduating from the Shidler College of Business at the University of Hawaiʻi, I started Tomodachi-USA with one dream: to create a bridge between Japan and the U.S.

Many Japanese learners study English for years, but they rarely get the chance to actually talk with native speakers. That’s why I wanted to build a space where American instructors and Japanese students can meet, learn from each other, and share cultures.

I hope every lesson becomes more than just language learning—it becomes a chance to connect with the world.

Lesson Types

One-on-One Lessons: Relaxed conversation-based lessons for beginners
Small Group Lessons: Hawaii-themed sessions with a fun, friendly vibe

Most of our students are beginners who simply want to start speaking English. Lessons are casual, supportive, and full of smiles.

Work Details

Location: Anywhere with a stable internet connection (Zoom / Google Meet)
Schedule: Set your own, but please keep Japan time in mind
Hours: Minimum 5 hours per week (10 time slots of 25 minutes each)
Peak Hours (HST): 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m. (the most requested times by Japanese learners)
Prep: Lesson plans and materials, as needed

Who We’re Looking For

We welcome instructors who are:

Friendly, patient, and able to guide conversations
Passionate about helping Japanese learners improve their speaking skills
Native-level English speakers
Comfortable using Zoom or Google Meet
Responsible and supportive, especially with beginners

Preferred Backgrounds

Students or graduates in Education, ESL, SLS, or related fields (GPA 3.0+ a plus)
Experienced English teachers
Bilingual (English/Japanese) speakers

Compensation

$14 – $25 per hour (depending on experience and lesson type)
