My First Time Living in Japan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When I was a junior in college, I moved to Kyoto for one year as part of a study abroad program. I had been learning Japanese for two years at the time and was very excited about Japanese culture and language. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had never visited Japan before, though, and didn\u2019t know what to expect. My images of Japan were all of big cities \u2013 I understood more or less what Tokyo looked like, but not Kyoto. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had been told Kyoto would be different from other Japanese cities, and also different from what I imagined. However, I still felt sure I would settle in quickly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I remember my first day stepping out of our hotel in Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had flown in during the night and hadn\u2019t seen anything yet. The hotel was next to Gosho, on Karasuma Street. It was August; the cicadas were so loud, and the wet heat so intense, I felt like nothing around me was even quite real. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A fleet of high school students on bicycles, with guitars on their backs, passed by me \u2013 but I didn\u2019t realize they were high schoolers. (In America, most high school students don\u2019t wear uniforms, and dress very casually for school.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Japan was very different from anything I had experienced before. For the first four months I lived there, I felt like a child \u2013 like someone who knew nothing at all about the world and had to be taught everything from the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The city itself was wonderful \u2013 I love all the seasons in Kyoto. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the fall colors were out, my friends and I dressed up in kimono and went out to take pictures with the leaves. In the winter, I loved and admired the ripe mikan on the trees, still so orange and fat, despite the cold. Spring, of course, was sakura. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The zany skyline of Kyoto never fails to make me smile \u2013 the tan and lopsided buildings, interspersed with temples and shrines. I love the combination of traditional architecture, as in Gion, with more modern buildings, as in Marutamachi or Shijo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Little by little as I stayed in Kyoto, I became more confident in Japanese language, and also in Japanese living. I became an old hand at paying in Japanese restaurants \u2013 visiting the front counter with my bill at the end, rather than waiting for a waitress, as I would in America. My chopstick skills improved with the help of my host father, who taught me how to use them right. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, I managed to make a lot of Japanese friends. I joined the Hiking Circle at my university and went on many fun adventures. Once, we even hiked back from Enryakuji to the city of Kyoto, finding our way through remote trails in the mountains! I couldn\u2019t believe we had made it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The friendships and memories I made in Kyoto will always be incredibly important to me. It was a time when I became more flexible and humbler as a person, and also realized more about who I wanted to become in the future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
