Every child raised in Hawaii knows that Hawaii was once a land filled with sugar plantations and mills. When I started high school and sang its alma mater song for the first time, I realized the town I grew up in, Waipahu, was also once filled with sugar canes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Hawaiian history classes, students in Hawaii learn about the Big Five<\/em>. The Big Five<\/em> (Alexander & Baldwin, Amfac, Castle & Cooke, C. Brewer & Co., and Theo H. Davies & Co.) were the companies in Hawaii that controlled the sugar industry. After Hawaii became a part of the U.S.A., sugar plantations and mills closed, and the Big Five<\/em> were bought by other companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, only a few sugar mills and plantations are left in Hawaii as historical landmarks. On the island of Oahu, the Waialua Sugar Mill (1865-1996), owned by Castle & Cooke, still stands. There is also the Ewa Sugar Company Plantation (1890-1970), also owned by Castle & Cooke, that displays old sugar trains that once transported sugar canes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Hawaii\u2019s Plantation Village, people who are interested in old plantation life may step into old plantation homes and learn about daily life in a plantation village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every year, Hawaii\u2019s Plantation Village hosts a Halloween event called the Haunted Plantation. Visitors must buy tickets online before going to the Haunted Plantation. At this event, visitors will step into each plantation house and encounter ghosts (from old plantation times) that scream, follow, and chase anyone they find interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
