Have you been to the farmers\u2019 market at KCC which is located close to Diamond Head? The farmers\u2019 market held at the parking lot there is one of the biggest farmer\u2019s markets in Hawai\u02bbi. It provides fresh vegetables and fruits and food such as pizza, bread, honey, chocolate, and lunch boxes. It is great fun for visitors and local people to visit there every Saturday, however, there aren\u2019t many who know about the famous cactus garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A man named Moriso Teraoka<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The cactus garden was created by Moriso Teraoka, a Japanese American, the second generation of Japanese immigrants, and a surviving member of \u203bthe 100th Infantry Battalion<\/strong><\/span>. He was a remarkably interesting man and had a lot of experience. He actually started as a student at KCC where he earned a degree in the culinary arts, at age 61, after he retired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Moriso has taught me<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When I attended the volunteer activity to clean the cactus garden, I asked him why he started to create this garden. He told me that one day he decided that he would like to clear the weeds and plant some cactus from his yard as he was a collector of cactus. He thought the sunny and sloped location at KCC was the best environment for growing his cactus. So, in 1988, he requested permission to do so from the KCC chancellor. For the next four years, Moriso worked at the garden for free, hauling rocks and dirt to make beds for his cactus every day and transporting cactus from his garden. Later, his family helped to clear the weeds on weekends. Neighbors got interested in his work, and they began to help him, and finally many staff members and students at KCC participated in the project as volunteers. The cactus grew and grew! Thus, their efforts produced the huge cactus garden you see today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teraoka\u2019s volunteer efforts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In recognition of Teraoka\u2019s volunteer efforts, he was presented a service award by then-KCC Chancellor John Morton in 1989. The school also received beautification awards from the Outdoor Circle in 1990 and 1998. The campus community and the neighborhood recognized Teraoka\u2019s efforts as well. By winning awards from the Outdoor Circle, it has been the focus of articles in several magazines and on TV shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
